'Dark Phoenix' Ending Was Reshot Because It's Too Similar To Another Superhero Movie

Dark Phoenix, the upcoming X-Men movie was initially scheduled to arrive in November 2018, but was later delayed to 2019 (first February, then to June) to make room for the film's reshoots last year.

Originally, we had been given reasons that seemed a bit generic, like the filmmakers wanting to ground the movie a bit more. However, stars James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender have revealed in a new interview with Yahoo UK that the ending actually changed because it closely resembled another mystery, recently released superhero movie.

Fassavoy said:
The end [of Dark Phoenix] changed a hell of a lot. The finale HAD to change. There was a lot of overlap and parallels with another superhero movie that came out... a while ago.
They had spies on set and basically stole our ideas.
The actors didn't dish on what movie specifically they're talking about.
The Playlist narrowed it down to Captain Marvel, which the ending is in space.

Speaking to Digital Spy, long-time X-Men producer Hutch Parker explained:
There was more of a cosmic story… the story ended in space in a much more significant way. We actually shifted that to be back on Earth, most notably, so that we can involve our main characters and see them come together.
The design of the Phoenix was also changed to be less flame-y, which would suggest a resemblance to Brie Larson’s transformation in Captain Marvel.

Sophie Turner is satisfied with the change.
It was just one of those things that was where the third act… you watch the first two acts and the third act just didn’t feel cohesive. We went back and we redid all of the third act, pretty much, and it was such a good decision. The third act is the best part of the movie for me.

Jessica Chastain’s mysterious villain also "changed a lot" in the reshoots.
